TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team scored 12 straight goals, including the only eight of the third quarter, and the No. 13 Engineers opened the 2017 season with a 17-10 victory over Keene State College in a non-league game at East Campus Stadium.
Trailing 5-3 early in the second quarter after three straight Keene State goals, RPI senior
Matt Hall answered when he scored on a bouncing shot while in transition down the right side. That goal was the first of four consecutive to end the half and Rensselaer led 7-5 at the break.
Seven different players scored for the Engineers in the first half, while the Owls had five different players find the back of the cage.
David Gibbs had six second quarter saves for RPI, including a point-blank stop with the visitors on a man-up and holding the lead.
Junior defenseman
Tom Feenstra sparked RPI out of the locker room by scoring three consecutive goals to open the half. His first came on a rebound at 13:17 and he followed that with a tally just 10 seconds later off the face-off. His third goal came 3:07 later and put RPI ahead by five, 10-5.
Matthew Gilman, who had a first quarter goal, then tallied the next two goals, followed by a pair of goals from
Breanainn McNeally and one from
Jake Weidner for a 10-goal lead, 15-5, after three quarters.
Keene battled to within seven goals by scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter, but Gilman got his fourth of the game despite being cross checked to the ground and shooting from his back from just outside the crease with six minutes to play.
Gilman, a midfielder, finished with four goals on seven shots with five ground balls, while McNeally had three goals and two assists from his attack position. Feenstra scored three goals for the Engineers, who won 20 of 31 face-offs.
Oliver Kaija was 17 of 24 with a game-high 11 ground balls. Gibbs finished with 18 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter.
Keene State, which is now 1-1, got three goals from Rob Hart and two goals and two assists from Bryan Rotatori. Frank Bacarella scored twice with an assist and Hunter Arnold scored once with two assists. Mat Howe played the first three quarters in the cage, making eight saves. J.J. Tinney had one in the final frame.
RPI returns to action next Saturday at No. 4 Ithaca College (1pm), while the Owls play at No. 3 Tufts University on March 8.
