TROY, N.Y. – Three players recorded multiple points to send the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team past Colgate University, 5-2, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-22-1 overall (4-12-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Raiders drop to 6-15-5 (4-8-2 ECAC Hockey).
RPI netted the only goal of the first period, just 3:48 into the frame. Junior
Lou Nanne (Edina, MN/Sioux Falls Stampede) took a short drop pass from sophomore
Brady Wiffen (St. Mary's ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) and snapped it past Colgate senior goalie Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, BC/Kingston Voyageurs) for his third goal of the year. Sophomore
Meirs Moore (Duluth, MN/Victoria Grizzlies) picked up the secondary assist on the play.
Junior Evan Peterson (Lakeville, MN/Carleton Place Canadians) brought the visitors even at 1:36 of the second, steering home a rebound at the doorstep for the first of his two goals on the night. Assists went to freshmen Bobby McMann (Wainwright, AB/Bonnyville Pontiacs) and John Snodgrass (Eagan, MN/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders).
The Engineers regained their edge at 6:03 of the second, when sophomore
Evan Tironese (Qualicum Beach, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) tallied after making a move at the blue line and moving into the left circle. Taking a feed in the neutral zone from freshman
Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars), Tironese threw a shoulder fake before beating Finn five-hole.
Peterson answered for the Raiders at 14:23 of the second to knot the score at 2-2. The power play marker, which deflected in off the skate of an RPI defenseman, saw assists from sophomore Willie Brooks (Locust, NJ/Carleton Place Canadians) and senior captain Jake Kulevich (Marblehead, MA/South Shore Kings).
Tironese then put the Engineers up for good (3-2) four minutes later, receiving a pass behind the net from senior captain
Riley Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY/Lincoln Stars) and finishing off a wrap-around, inside the far left post, for his sixth goal of the year.
Junior
Viktor Liljegren (Stockholm, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) made it a 4-2 game at 14:36 of the third, driving the net from the left wing boards and sticking home his sixth of the season. Helpers on the play went to Wiffen and Bourbonnais.
RPI added an empty-netter from Bourbonnais at 18:32 to cap the scoring. The tally was Bourbonais' fourth in the last four games.
Sophomore goaltender
Chase Perry (Andover, MN/Wenatchee Wild) made 40 saves, including 18 in the third period alone, while Finn had 23 stops at the other end of the ice. Rensselaer was 1 for 3 on the power play, while Colgate was 1 for 4.
The Engineers return to the ice tomorrow night, when they host No. 16 Cornell (7pm). Colgate visits No. 4 Union tomorrow (7pm).
