HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Colgate women's ice hockey team notched three unanswered goals to earn a shutout over Rensselaer Friday night to cap a successful night at their seventh annual Autism Awareness Night. With the win, the Raiders improve to 19-7-3 overall (10-6-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 9-18-2 (6-10-1 ECAC Hockey).
Both teams had several opportunities to break the deadlock in the first period with a few great looks, but neither was able to find the back of the net. Colgate took a 16-8 shot advantage into the first intermission.
The Raiders came out firing in the second and took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the frame. Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) stole the puck from the defense, skated in from the right side and crossed the puck to the opposite side of the net. Megan Sullivan (Toronto, Ontario) was waiting and one-timed the pass into the back of the goal for her eighth of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Labbe tallied a goal of her own as she cleaned up a blocked shot in front of the goal. Olivia Zafuto (Niagara Falls, New York) took the initial shot from above the left circle and Labbe one-timed the rebound past Rensselaer goaltender
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden). Shelby Perry (Elginburg, Ontario) picked up the secondary assist.
Annika Zalewski (New Hartford, New York) made the score 3-0 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. Ellie DeCaprio (Wellesley, Massachusetts) passed the puck from behind the net and Zalewski took a hard shot that sailed into the upper left hand corner of the goal. Livia Altmann (Arosa, Switzerland) was credited with the secondary assist.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they visit seventh-ranked Cornell (3pm). Colgate hosts Union tomorrow (3pm).
