CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior captain
Stephanie Caudle recorded four hits, including a three-run home run to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to wins of 8-4 and 7-4 over Fredonia and Salve Regina, respectively, on Sunday afternoon. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 6-0 on the season.
In game one against Fredonia, Rensselaer came back from a 2-1 deficit to pull even in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI-groundout off the bat of sophomore
Devan Puhl.
The Engineers then put together a six-run bottom of the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. Freshman
Cam Caswell highlighted the rally with a bases-clearing double to the fence in left.
Fredonia drew to within four (8-4), when Katelyn Dennis ripped a two-run homer to center.
RPI freshman righthander
Jaime Cleasby earned her first collegiate win, pitching the final 5.0 innings. She surrendered two unearned runs on four hits, striking out five without a walk.
Caudle got the Engineers out to a hot start in game two against Salve Regina, launching a three-run homer in the top of the first inning.
Junior
Victoria Greco came around to score on an error to make it 4-0 after two innings. A Puhl double and another Salve Regina error pushed the RPI lead to 7-0 in the sixth.
The Seahawks mounted a comeback, beginning in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore Emily Woznick hit a two-run home run. Classmate Elizabeth Lombardo made it a 7-3 game, before Megan Guest brought home the game's final run with a groundout to second.
Caudle went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. She struck out five batters and walked one.
Rensselaer is back in action on Tuesday, when it takes on Stockton (6pm) and Messiah (8:30pm). Salve Regina duels Susquehanna (3:30pm) and Smith (6pm) on Monday.
