AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Seniors
Sam Lawrence and
Sean Welling each hit home runs and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team recorded 12 hits in defeating Trinity College (Conn.), 9-6, on Monday at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-6, while the Bantams drop to 2-2.
RPI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, beginning with an RBI-single to right by Welling (Baltimore, MD/Lock Raven). Junior shortstop
Ethann Meister (Santa Teresa, NM/Santa Teresa) followed with a two-run triple to the gap in right center.
With one out in the third, Lawrence (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School) drove a towering homer to straight away center for a 4-0 lead. Welling then doubled down the line in left to score classmate
Jason Ramos (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) and give the Engineers a 5-0 lead.
Trinity got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by junior Carter Snyde (Lemont, IL/Lake Forest Academy). A Ryan Vultaggio (Vero Beach, FL/Noble and Greenough) run-scoring single in the sixth brought the Bantams within 5-3.
A four-run bottom of the seventh gave Trinity a 6-5 lead. Junior Tyler Forgione (North Branford, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) delivered the go-ahead sac fly.
The Bantams' lead did not last long, however, as the Engineers answered with a four-run inning of their own. Welling tied the game with a home run to left, before senior captain
Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) gave RPI the lead for good with a slicing line drive single to left, scoring Meister.
A two-run single by Lawrence gave Rensselaer some breathing room for the final three innings.
