Big First Half Pushes Women's Lax Past Roger Williams

Engineers score seven in the open 30 minutes in defeating Hawks, 9-6

CLERMONT, Fla. - Senior captain Sophie Hager recorded a game-high four points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 9-6 victory over Roger Williams University, on Monday morning at the National Training Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-2, while the Hawks drop to 3-2.

After junior captain Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) opened the scoring less than a minute in, Hager (Northport, NY/Northport) made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally from the right side of the cage.

The Engineers went on to score the game's first six tallies before the halfway point of the opening stanza. Hager had two of them and assisted on another. Sophomore Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) ended the RPI scoring run at 18:36 of the first half, scoring off a feed from classmate Marin Owens (Brookline, NH/Hollis Brookline).

Senior captain Carly Kirchner (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) answered less than a minute later for a 7-1 RPI lead at halftime.

Hager then opened the second half with a man-up goal to give the Engineers their largest lead of the day (8-1).

Freshman Shayne Rivard (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) cut the Roger Williams deficit to 8-2 at 11:37.

RPI sophomore Abbey Salvon (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) helped create some separation  when she scored with 16:26 to play, with an assist to freshman Liz Brady (Bradford, MA/Haverhill).

The Hawks then went on a 4-0 scoring run by four different players, including Stoeppel's second of the contest. The Engineers were able to win the ensuing draw control and run out the clock with a pair of long offensive possessions.

Sophomore starting goalie Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) made four saves in the opening 42:53, before giving way to freshman Maya Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who had three stops. Roger Williams senior Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) had three saves.

Rensselaer concludes its Florida schedule against Denison on Wednesday afternoon (4pm), while Roger Williams takes on Westfield State on Thursday (10am).
