Breanainn McNeally scored seven goals with an assist and sophomore
JT Kelly added three goals and four assists to lead the No. 19 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over Plattsburgh State University in a non-league game at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers have now won four straight games to improve to 5-2, while the Cardinals drop to 5-3.
McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spalding), among the leading point producers in Division III, and Kelly (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough) helped RPI score 11 consecutive goals in the second and third quarters to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 12-2 lead. Kelly had three markers and four assists in the span, while McNeally notched six goals and an assist.
Following a first quarter that saw the score tied at 1-1, junior Billy Moller (Greenlawn, NY / Harborfields) put Plattsburgh ahead, 2-1, 2:16 into the second. Rensselaer junior
Matthew Gilman (St. Louis, MO / John Burroughs) tied the game at 2-2 with his second of three goals before Kelly made it 3-2. McNeally followed with two in a row, both assisted by Kelly, before Kelly sandwiched a Gilman tally for an 8-2 edge. McNeally then scored four straight with Gilman,
Owen Putman (Ballston Lake, NY / Shenendehowa) and Kelly (twice) assisting.
Three of McNeally's goals came with a man-up and Gilman also scored with Plattsburgh down a player. RPI was 4 of 9 on man-up opportunities and 1 for 1 on man-down in the game.
The Cardinals got consecutive goals from senior Ryan Callahan (Miller Place, NY / Miller Place) - his team-leading 23rd and 24th of the season - but McNeally's seventh of the game and 28th of the year with six seconds left in the third quarter made it a 13-4 advantage. Putman followed with an underhanded shot that found the back of the net just under the crossbar before Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, NY / Riverhead) scored his second of the game with 6:35 left in regulation.
Gilman, a midfielder, added two assists for a five-point game and Putman had a goal and an assist. Senior
David Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) finished with eight saves, including three in each of the first two quarters, in 52:42 to improve to 5-2. Junior
Oliver Kaija (Woodstock, VT / Woodstock Union) won 9 of 13 faceoffs with four ground balls for the Engineers, who held a 45-28 edge in shots and 32-26 in ground balls.
Junior Austin Graham (Yorktown Heights, NY / Yorktown) had 15 saves for the Cardinals, including five in the second quarter. Plattsburgh opens it's SUNYAC slate on Saturday when it travels to SUNY Oswego (1pm).
RPI returns to the field on Saturday at 6pm at Liberty League foe Vassar College. The game was originally scheduled for 1pm, but was moved to 6pm.
