TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Stephanie Caudle homered and earned the win in the circle to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader split with Mount Saint Mary College, on Thursday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. The Engineers, who won Game 1 of the twin bill, 7-4, are now 17-7 overall, while the Knights, who came back to take Game 2, 2-1, are 18-12.
Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) hit a first inning, three-run home run to give the Engineers an early 3-0 lead.
Mount Saint Mary junior Taylor Canto (Walden, NY/Valley Central) got one back in the top of the second, singling home freshman Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) to make it 3-1.
An RBI-single from junior
Christine White (Acushnet, MA/Tabor Academy) got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, lobbing a single to center with two on base.
Canto delivered another run-scoring single in the fourth, to draw the Knights to within, 4-2, but RPI plated three in the bottom of the fifth to create a five-run cushion (7-2). Senior
Courtney McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary Academy) highlighted the frame with a long double that scored two.
A seventh inning rally from the visitors came up short, as RBI-singles from freshman Emily Lang (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) and senior Shannon Sommer (Brewster, NY/Brewster) were only able cut the deficit to 7-4.
???????Caudle (7-2) earned the win in relief of junior
Sarah Harms (Wilsonville, OR/Wilsonville), allowing two runs (1 earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings. She struck out five without a walk. Harms worked the opening 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. She had three strikeouts and three walks.
In Game 2, Bennett took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth inning, before opposing rookie Maddy Provencher (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) broke it up with an RBI-triple to right.
A two-run top of the seventh gave the Knights their first lead of the day, as Canto and Lang came through late for the second game in a row. Bennett was able to shut the door after RPI worked the tying run to third base.
Freshman
Jaime Cleasby (Windham, NH/Windham) took the tough luck loss, allowing just two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. She struck out four and walked two. Bennett surrendered one run on five hits in the 7.0-inning complete game.
The Engineers return to action this weekend, when they visit Liberty League-foes Rochester and RIT on Saturday (1pm) and Sunday (1pm), respectively. Mount Saint Mary visits Old Westbury on Saturday (1pm).
