TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Ethann Meister plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team past Williams College, 4-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 16-16 overall, while the Ephs drop to 15-9.
Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, senior captain
Sam Lawrence (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School) tied the game with a line drive home run over the fence in left.
RPI threatened to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, when junior
Weston Hawkins (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) singled through the right side of the infield with senior captain
Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) on second. Desmond was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Jack Cloud (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) to send the game to extra innings.
After the Ephs went down in order in the top of the 10th, Lawrence opened the bottom with a single up the middle. Freshman
Jimmy Jankowski (Bellport, NY/Bellport), who entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth, dropped down a sac bunt and tried to advance on a throwing error, but the play was backed up by Cloud, who gunned him down at second. Lawrence wound up at third with one away for Meister, who singled through the left side of a drawn in infield for the walk-off win.
Williams freshman starter Charlie Carpenter (Bedford, NY/Deerfield) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before finally getting relieved in the seventh. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 6.2 innings, striking out six with two walks.
The Engineers used seven predetermined arms, including senior captain
Adam Aponte (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), wo picked up the win (3-1) after working a perfect ninth and 10th. He struck out one. All seven pitchers struck out at least one batter, including sophomore starter
Brendan McNerney (Arsdley, NY/Ardsley), who struck out the side in the top of the first.
Meister, Hawkins and Lawrence all finished with two hits apiece. Cloud went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBI for the Ephs.
The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they travel to Rochester for a four-game series against the Yellowjackets, beginning on Saturday (1pm). Williams visits Hamilton for three this weekend, starting on Friday (4pm).
