UTICA, N.Y. - Junior
Sarah Harms pitched 5.0 shutout innings to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team salvage a doubleheader split at Utica College on Wednesday afternoon. After falling 2-0 in Game 1, the Engineers took Game 2, 5-0, to improve to 20-10 overall. The Pioneers move to 15-19 on the season.
Harms allowed just two hits over 5.0 innings in the Game 2 win, with senior
Stephanie Caudle coming on for the 2.0-inning save - her third of the year.Â
An error allowed the Engineers to break onto the board in the top of the third, as junior
Rebecca Kienz came around to score for a 1-0 lead.
RPI then added some much needed insurance in the top of the seventh, scoring four times on four hits. Junior Devon Puhl delivered a two-run single to center, before
Chelsea Elliott ropped a base hit to left for a 4-0 lead. Caudle capped the rally with an RBI-groundout to second.
In Game 1, freshman
Jaime Cleasby was the tough luck loser for Rensselaer, allowing two runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out two and walked two. Utica junior Brittany Meka tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks.
Utica scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single from Hayley Fredericks, before Kassidy Ogren made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right.
RPI is back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts Ithaca College for a single game at Union College (3:30pm). The Pioneers travel to SUNY Poly on Friday (3:30pm).
