TROY, N.Y. – Six players recorded multiple points for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team which fell to Skidmore College, 17-11, in its season finale on Friday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-5 overall (7-2 Liberty League), while the Engineers conclude their season at 6-9 (4-5 Liberty League).
Skidmore senior Tyler Phillips (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) registered a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Cas Szwajkowski (Rye, NY/Northfield Mount Hermon) and junior Marisa Caponi (Wayne, NJ/Indian Hills) had three goals apiece.
All six multi-point scorers for the Engineers were underclassmen, including sophomore
Michelle Bolger (Williston, VT/Rice Memorial) and freshmen
Casey Clarke (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) and
Liz Brady (Bradford, MA/Haverhil) who all had two goals.
Rensselaer got out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening six minutes, as sophomore
Erin Goodwin (Kensington, CT/Berlin) scored on the rush to get the scoring started. After Clarke put RPI up 3-1 roughly 10 minutes in, the Thoroughbreds went a tidy 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead.
Szwajkowski jump-started the rally with two goals, less than two minutes apart, before Phillips and senior Allison Byrne (West Hartford, CT/The Loomis Chaffee School) joined in with tallies of their own. Clarke halted the run to make it 5-4, but a man-up tally and freshman Amanda Orvis' (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) first of the game pushed the visitors' advantage to 7-4 with 12:48 left in the first half.
RPI then went a 3-0 run to close out the half, tying the game at 7-7. Junior captain
Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) got the Engineers going with her 20th goal of the season, before Bolger and freshman
Becca DeRosa (Fair Lawn, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) found the back of the net.
Sophomore
Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) gave Rensselaer a brief 9-8 lead, early in the second half, but three straight from the Thoroughbreds gave them the lead for good at 10-8.
Bolger cut the deficit to 10-9 with her 12th goal of the season with 22:50 left, but a 5-0 Skidmore scoring run, that spanned 11 minutes, helped create some separation.
Brady netted her two markers late to draw within 15-11, but a pair empty-net tallies with the Engineers' defense extended capped the scoring for the Thoroughbreds.
RPI sophomore goalie
Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) finished with nine saves, while Megan Kolopsky (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) had eight stops for Skidmore.
