Baseball Sweeps SLU, 3-2 and 1-0

Engineers walk-off in Game 1, before Zecha and Aponte combine for shutout in Game 2

TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain Adam Aponte earned a win and a save as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball teams swept a Liberty League doubleheader with St. Lawrence University on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field. With wins of 3-2 and 1-0, the Engineers improve to 8-12 overall (3-3 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 4-7 (2-4 Liberty League).

Sophomore Evan O'Keefe (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) singled home the game's first run in the top of the second, but RPI answered in the bottom half on an opposite field, RBI-single off the bat of junior third baseman J.T. Sawyer (Johnsonville, NY/Hoosic Valley).

St. Lawrence then took a 2-1 advantage in the third, thanks to a sacrifice fly from junior Michael LeFevre (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington), which scored freshman Brendon Frank (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) from third.

An RBI-double from Rensselaer senior catcher Sean Welling (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) brought classmate Sam Lawrence (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School) home to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.

After three scoreless frames, the Engineers put two runners on in the seventh on a hit batter and a walk to seniors Justin Valente (West Palm Beach, FL/Saint Andrews) and Lawrence, respectively. A wild pitch moved them both up a base, before Welling lifted a game-winning sac fly to center.

Aponte (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) worked a perfect top of the seventh for his second win of the season. Junior Nick Pacifico (Newburgh, NY/Wallkill) worked 4.0 innings as the starter, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out one and walked one.

In Game 2, freshman righthander Erick Zecha (Keene, NH/Keene) earned his first collegiate win, hurling 6.0 shutout innings. He surrendered two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Lawrence provided the punch RPI needed in the bottom of the fourth, launching his team-leading fourth home run of the season over the fence in left off of SLU starter Caleb Clarke (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy).

Aponte needed just seven pitches in the seventh, despite allowing a leadoff single to sophomore Anthony Butler (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill). He struck out one in earning his second save of the year.

RPI is back on the diamond this weekend, when it hosts Clarkson University for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday. The Saints travel to St. John Fisher on Saturday (3pm).
