POTSDAM, N.Y. - It took more than 67 minutes to separate the two teams, but it was the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team who fell 10-9 in triple overtime to RPI on Saturday on Hantz Turf Field. Clarkson falls to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League. RPI improves to 4-6 to go with a 2-2 conference mark.
Â
The first half was dominated by the Engineers.
Casey Clarke scored a free position goal at 28:50 to give RPI a 1-0 lead, but that goal was canceled out by an Abby Collinsscore at 24:19 with her sister Taylor Collins getting the assist. However, the Engineers scored the next four goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Clarkson got a little momentum when Kate Dillon scored a free position shot with 3:39 left in the first half. That was the final goal of the first frame and Clarkson went into the break trailing 5-2.
Â
Jaid Baytos got the second half started on the right foot as she scored a free position shot 2:30 into the half. However, RPI bounced back as
Sophie Hager scored at 25:11.
Â
Another goal from Baytos at 18:19, with Katie Sergeant getting the assist, got Clarkson back within two, but the Engineers scored two goals within 30 seconds of each other.
Morgan Doyle scored a free position shot at 17:51 and then
Allie Claroni added another goal at 17:25 as Hager found her with a pass.
Â
Trailing by four goals, the Golden Knights went on a run to close the gap. Dillon scored at 16:31 to get the rally started. Baytos then scored the next two goals for Clarkson, one at 15:40 and the next at 11:04. Hager regained some breathing room for RPI with a goal at 5:50, but Baytos scored her fifth goal of the game with only 48 seconds remaining to get Clarkson back within one goal.
Â
That set up a frantic last possession for Clarkson. Christina Pollard won the draw for Clarkson, but the Green and Gold had to retreat into their own end. Clarkson then quickly moved the ball up field until it found Dillon on the left side of the RPI goal. Dillon fired a pass across the goal mouth to Pollard who scored with only six seconds remaining to tie the game.
Â
The two teams went to overtime and although Clarkson had five shots in the first two extra periods, neither team could find the winning goal after six minutes. In the third overtime frame,
Abbey Salvon finally got the first shot of overtime for RPI and it found the back of the net to give the Engineers a 10-9 triple overtime win.
Â
Clarkson finished with a 35-20 edge in shots while RPI controlled 13 of the game's 22 draws. Baytos finished with five goals while Dillon had three points on two goals and an assist. Abby Collins picked up five ground balls for Clarkson, while Taylor Collins scooped up four of her own. Both Collins sisters and Amanda Ellman led Clarkson with four caused turnovers. Samantha Gladd made six saves in goal for Clarkson.
Â
Clarkson's next game will be on Friday, April 14th, when the Golden Knights travel to the University of Rochester. Â
