TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team outscored St. Lawrence University by a combined 18-2 in sweeping a Liberty League doubleheader at Doris Robison Field on Sunday afternoon. With wins of 10-2 and 8-0, the Engineers improve to 12-4 overall (2-0 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 12-4 (2-2 Liberty League).

In Game 1, RPI got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second. After the Saints tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run homer by Mylea Mann (Thousand Oaks, CA/La Reina) in the top of the second, the Engineers answered, plating two on a single from junior Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD/Linganore) and a third on sacrifice fly from senior Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville).

Rensselaer tacked on two more runs in the fourth, before Puhl scored two more with a double in the fifth. The game ended prematurely in that inning after junior Christine White (Acushnet, MA/Tabor Academy) put the hosts up eight with a single up the middle, scoring Puhl.

Caudle improved to 5-1, allowing two runs on one hit in 5.0 innings. She struck out seven and walked two. St. Lawrence starter Madison Mitchell (Lincoln, CA/Whitney) lost for the just the first time this season (8-1), working just 1.0 inning and surrendering five runs on four hits.

Game 2 saw the Engineers score seven runs in the opening three frames. Caudle got them started with a double that brought home Puhl in the first. Junior Rebecca Kienz (Newburgh, NY/Valley Central) then drove home two with a single back through the box that scored freshman Maddie Provencher (Rutland, VT/Wachusett Regional) and White.

In the home half of the third, White collected an RBI-double in front of a three-run homer off the bat of freshman Allie Hunt (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield).

???????Caudle ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, with a single up the middle that scored Veronica DeStefano (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) and made it 8-0.

Freshman righthander Jaime Cleasby (Windham, NH/Windham) went the distance for RPI, giving up five hits over 6.0 innings. She struck out four and walked one. Allie Courtwright (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) suffered the loss for the Saints, allowing six runs (5 earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings.

The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday (3pm), when they host Castleton for a non-league doubleheader. St. Lawrence travels to Middlebury on Wednesday (3pm).
