Engineers conclude season at 27-14 after 1-0 defeat at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Sophomore Casey Pelz drove in the only run of the game to lift the Williams College softball team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the Regional Final, Sunday afternoon at Cole Field. With the win, the Ephs improve to 34-10 and advance the Super Regional, while the Engineers conclude their season at 27-14.

RPI senior righthander Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) took a perfect game into the fifth inning, before Williams was finally able to break through. Freshman Rebecca Duncan (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) led off the frame with a base hit to left. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, before Pelz (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) rolled a single through the left side to plate Duncan.

After going down in order in the top of the sixth, the Engineers erased a one-out baserunner in the bottom of the inning, as Caudle struck out junior Lexi Curt (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) and junior catcher Christine White (Acushnet, MA/Tabor Academy) threw down to second to nab sophomore Jessica Kim (Tustin, CA/Beckman) on a steal attempt.

Rensselaer got a runner aboard with one out in the seventh, when freshman Cam Caswell (Prospect, CT/Woodland Regional) roped a single up the middle. Classmate Maddie Provencher (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) lined into a 6-3 double play to end the game.

Caudle (16-6) allowed just one run on three hits over 6.0 innings. She struck out six and walked one. Duncan (15-4) surrendered four hits and two walks, while striking out 10. She was also 1 for 2 with a run scored at the plate.

Provencher led the way offensively for RPI, going 2 for 3. Junior Chelsea Elliott (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Caswell each went 1 for 3. Pelz was 1 for 2 with a run batted in.
