Women's Soccer Blanks Sage, 5-0

Engineers receive goals from four different players, with Kradinova earning two assists

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Maddie Steinmetz paced a balance scoring attack that saw four Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes score in a 5-0 women's soccer victory over The Sage Colleges, on Sunday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-2 overall, while the Gators drop to 3-2.

Steinmetz (Malvern, PA/West Chester East) fired the opening salvo in the 15th minute, left-footing home a cross from the right side of the 18 by sophomore Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge), for her first collegiate goal.

RPI's opening marker came just a minute after sophomore goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) turned in the save of the day, parrying a shot from Sage freshman Lydia Malkiewicz (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) off the crossbar and out.

Sophomore wing-back Jeanine Moreau (Litchfield, CT/Phillips Academy) doubled the Rensselaer lead in the 31st minute, lobbing a shot in off the underside of the crossbar from the top of the box. Cutting the ball back to her left foot, she chipped Gators junior Emma Augustine (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville) for her first goal of the year.

The Engineers took advantage of a long throw from senior Bethany Hanson (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) to score their third goal, as a bounding ball was tracked down by junior Katya Kradinova (Boxborough, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) at the far edge if the six. She sent a low pass across the face of goal for sophomore Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield), who smashed home her first of 2017.

A Sage own goal in the 47th minute made it a 4-0 game. Rensselaer senior Dali Alarian (Folsom, CA/Vista del Lago) sent in a corner from the left that redirected into the Gators net by a defender.

Freshman Olenka Soko (Fort Worth, TX/Byron Nelson) capped the scoring in the 85th minute, sacrificing her body to tap home a low cross from Kradinova, who made a long run up the right flank. Soko was forced to deal with a defender on her hip and a charging Augustine, but did well to notch her first collegiate goal from just inside the six.

Kradinova's two assists were her first two points as an Engineer. Lyons (1-1) was forced to make just the one save in the first half, before giving way to senior Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), who made two stops in the second half. Augustine (3-1) finished with nine stops for the Gators.

RPI outshot the Sage 19-5, including 11-1 in the first half. The Engineers attempted five corners and did not concede one to the opposition.

The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they visit Smith College (4pm). The Gators hosts Stevens on Saturday (1pm).
