TROY, N.Y. – Senior Malcolm Singleton netted the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the Williams College men's soccer team over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Ephs improve to 2-0, while the Engineers drop to 3-2.
Singleton (Atlanta, GA/Paideia School) took a long ball in stride up the right flank and snuck a shot, short side, past RPI sophomore goalkeeper
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional). Junior center back Gregory Andreou (Baltimore, MD/Towson) produced the assist on Singleton's first of the year, which came in the eighth minute of play.
Rensselaer first shot came two minutes later, as senior captain
Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) found the mitts of Williams senior goalie Bobby Schneiderman (Linvingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep).
Williams then established some sustained pressure as the first half reached its midway point. Back-to-back corners from sophomore Chris Fleischer (Bethesda, MD/St. Albans School) in the 19th and 21st minutes produced quality chances, but an Andreou shot was blocked and a header from sophomore Liam Bardong (Manhasset, NY/Friends Academy) sailed over the bar.
LaBranche was forced to makes two saves in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza, including a 41st minute attempt from freshman Eli Petrik (Austin, TX/Westlake).
Offense was even tougher to come by in the second half, as chances were at a premium on both ends.
Rensselaer turned in a pair of late chances to try and find the equalizer, including a free kick that was redirected just high by sophomore
Brandon Pirog (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) in the 81st minute.
Pirog recorded two of RPI's three shot attempts, as Williams out-shot the Engineers 15-3, while taking eight corners to Rensselaer's three. LaBranche (3-2) finished with seven saves, while Schneiderman (2-0) had just one.
The Ephs run their record in the series to 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings, with seven decided by one goal or fewer.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday against Potsdam at East Campus Stadium (4pm), while Williams visits Colby on Saturday (1:30pm).
