TROY, N.Y. - Senior
Bethany Hanson's first half goal was all the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institite (RPI) women's soccer team needed in defeating Farmingdale State, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-1-0, while the Rams drop to 0-1-1.
Hanson (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) claimed her own rebound and slotted home her first goal of the year in the fourth minute. Farmingdale sophomore keeper Daniella Ford (Dix Hills, NY/Swaanhaka) made the initial stop, but the ball caromed back to Hanson, who capitalized on the second chance. The tally was the second of the center back's career at RPI.
Farmingdale nearly answered in the seventh minute, but Rensselaer senior goalkeeper
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) robbed Rams freshman Brittney Starzee (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) of a close range try and the Engineers were able to clear to safety.
Rensselaer held an 8-3 edge in shots after 45 minutes, while attempting the only corner kick of the first half. Two yellow cards were handed out in the opening 20 minutes - one each way.
Neither team was able to generate much in the way of scoring chances in the second half. RPI sophomore
Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield) saw her 76th minute try sail over the bar, before classmateÂ
Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) put her shot wide in the 80th.
The Rams brought numbers forward for a 90th minute corner kick, but Riopelle leap to secure the ball and the victory. She finished with four saves for her first clean sheet since October 10, 2015, while Ford had seven saves for Farmingdale.
RPI is back in action on Friday, when it visits Plattsburgh (7pm). The Rams travel to Trinity (CT) on Wednesday (6:30pm).
