Men's Soccer Stops Keene State

Engineers earn 2-0 shutout win over non-league foe

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team held Keene State College without a shot on goal in earning a 2-0 shutout victory, on Sunday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-2, while the Owls drop to 4-2-2.

Freshman center back Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) scored the opening goal in the 20th minute of play, after an RPI corner kick was partially cleared. Senior captain Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) layed the ball back to Bisson, who launched a shot from 30 yards out, finding the left side-netting, for his third goal of the year.

RPI lead 1-0 at halftime, with a 7-1 advantage in shots on target and a 3-0 corner kick edge.

Sophomore Dylan Confair (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport Area) doubled the hosts' lead in the 48th minute, placing a left-footed shot inside the right post for his second tally of the season. Classmate Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) delivered a low cross from the end line, finding Confair alone in the middle of the penalty area.

The Engineers nearly made it 3-0 in the 61st minute, but an attempt from outside the box by junior Trevor McCaughey (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) found the left upright.

Keene State had two late opportunities to try and draw within a goal, but shots from seniors William Salta (Laconia, NH/Laconia) and Aidan Dean (Laconia, HS/Laconia) were off the mark.

Rensselaer senior goalkeeper Ryan Nealon (Somers, NY/Somers) was not forced to make a save, but was strong in the area in hauling in a handful of Owls crosses. Senior Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) registered five stops at the other end of the field.

Bisson's tally was his second game-winner of the year, while Betterly and Collins each dished out their third assist.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they resume Liberty League play at Skidmore (4pm). Keene State hosts Western New England on Wednesday (5pm).
