ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior
Sean Larkin scored the winning goal, late in the second half, to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island College, on Friday afternoon at Red Dragon Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0 for the second time in three years, while the Anchormen sink to 0-2-1.
Larkin (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) broke a 2-2 tie in the 89th minute, tapping home a lofted attempt from classmate
Danny Corridan (Queens, NY/Archbishop Molloy) for his first collegiate tally. The go-ahead marker came just seconds after Corridan's penalty try was pushed aside by Rhode Island freshman goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, RI/West Warwick).
The Anchorman were the first to find the scoresheet in the dying moments of the first half, when senior striker Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI/Hope) collected a loose ball in the RPI penalty area and slotted it home for a 1-0 lead.
Trailing by a goal at the half for the second straight game, the Engineers once again found early life in the second half, netting a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take the lead.
Senior captain
Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) drew RPI even in the 54th minute, redirecting a long throw in towards goal. The bouncing ball deflected off Tashjian and in for Collins' second tally of the young season.
Just 51 seconds later, sophomore
Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, MA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) created a chance all on his own, bursting onto the end of a long punt from classmate
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and driving towards goal, before picking out the inside of the left post for his first of the season.
Rhode Island equalized in the 72nd minute, when Dogbey slipped in behind the RPI defense and curled a right-footed shot past LaBranche for his second on the day.
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock, including a Dennis Vasquez (Providence, RI/Cranston East) attempt that found the crossbar in the 88th minute.
Rensselaer then drew the PK, which set up the eventual winning score. LaBranche (3-0) finished with three saves, while Tashjian (0-1-1) had five in his first collegiate defeat.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they take on the Mayor's Cup hosts from Oneonta (4pm), while the Anchormen draw St. Lawrence tomorrow (1pm).
