SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sam Krumbhaar led all scorers with 15 points and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team held Union College to only 27.3% shooting in a 47-37 win over the Dutchwomen in a Liberty League contest. The win was the 10th for RPI, which is now 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference, while Union falls to 5-10 and 2-7.
Rensselaer led 14-11 after the first quarter and then scored eight of the 10 points of the second quarter for a 22-13 edge at halftime. Krumbhaar had eight first half points, including a pair of three-pointers. Union managed just five field goals on 24 attempts (20.8%).
The Engineers doubled up Union in the third quarter, 10-5, for a 32-18 lead after 30 minutes and then held off the Dutchwomen for the 10-point victory. Union had cut its deficit to six points in the final frame, but RPI was successful on the free throw line down the stretch.
Krumbhaar made 5 of 14 shots, while Elizabeth Eckhardt had eight points and eight rebounds. Ines Ortea scored nine points with six rebounds for Rensselaer, which never trailed in the game. Nicole Conley led the home team with 11 points.
RPI returns home on Friday when it hosts first-place RIT at 6pm at East Campus Arena.
