TROY, N.Y. – Three Engineers hit double-digit points as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) upended RIT, 67-49. With the win, Rensselaer improves to 9-8 (4-6 Liberty League), while RIT falls to 8-9 (6-4 Liberty League).
The two teams traded baskets for the first five minutes, with RPI holding a 9-6 lead. Robert Aguilera scored the first six points for the Tigers, while it was scoring by committee for the Engineers.
For the first 7:30, the biggest lead for either team was five, when RPI led 12-7. The teams continued to battle until Rensselaer started a 14-4 run to end the half. Junior
Tom Horvat was a big contributor, as he hit back-to-back threes in 40 seconds. The lead was exchanged five times in the first half, as well as having a tie game four times.
At the end of the first 20 minutes, it was RPI holding a 33-25 lead. Horvat led the way for the Engineers with 13 points, going 8 for 10 from the field. Aguilera finished the half as RIT's leading scorer with eight points. RPI benefited the most from turnovers, winning that category 10-4 with 14 points off miscues. RPI scored 14 points off those turnovers. RIT managed one basket off their takeaways.
The second half was similar to the first. The Engineers denied any type of run from the Tigers and were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Within 50 seconds of each other mid-way through the second half, the Tigers left freshman Patrick Mahoney wide-open on two separate occasions, and he nailed the three each time. Mahoney finished the night with eight points on 4 of 11 shooting.
While the Tigers were able to pull within five points 2:30 into the second half, that was the closest they would get.
Horvat joined classmates
Andreas Kontopidis and
Marcus Giese in double-digit points, finishing with 17, 12, and 12, respectively. Giese added six boards to be the team's leading rebounder, while Kontopidis had a game-high five assists. RIT was led by Troy Pierre-Louis, with 14 points, and Aguilera, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Turnovers were again the story in the second half, as RIT had nine, while RPI had four. RPI scored 20 of their points off of turnovers, while RIT had just seven. RIT did beat RPI in rebounds (30-24) and points in the paint (26-20).
The Engineers take the court Saturday afternoon (4pm) against Skidmore College, while the Tigers look to bounce back as they visit Hobart College on Saturday (4pm).
