Dutchwomen’s Second Period Push Tops Engineers

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College's Cheyenne Harris had a goal and an assist, including the eventual game-winner, in the Dutchwomen's 2-1 ECAC Hockey win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period that saw 10 saves from RPI's Lovisa Selander, Union's Katelynn Russ gathered the puck at center ice to find Katie Laughlin coming off the bench in transition. The senior made her way around three RPI defenders, but was stuffed by Selander to keep the game scoreless. On the following faceoff, Laughlin had a second chance directly outside the crease, but the Swedish sensation blanked the senior once again.

At the 11:57 mark of the second period, RPI (7-15-5, 4-9-2 ECAC Hockey) was called for its first penalty for tripping on Marisa Raspa. Following a wide shot from Caitlyn McLauren, Rensselaer's Shayna Tomlinson won the puck in transition on a bad pass from Union (7-16-4, 5-9-1 ECAC Hockey). The forward was 1v1 to the net, but Coco Francis made a kick save. Tomlinson won the rebound for a quick second shot that hit off the pipe. Junior Jamie Grigsby grabbed the second rebound for a spinning shot that went just wide.

A few seconds late, the Engineers had their third shorthanded opportunity when Josefine Hansen and Madeleine Burnett won the puck to find Sabrina Repaci streaking through the neutral zone. The sophomore took the puck straight to the net, but was denied by Francis. Repaci took another shot off the rebound that Francis again kept out of the net.

With six seconds left in the power play, the Dutchwomen made a final push that was successful and ended the stalemate. Russ scored her 12th goal of the season off assists from Harris and Megan Ryan. Less than three minutes later, Harris gathered the puck in the RPI zone and took a shot that was saved by the foot of Selander. However, the sophomore took the rebound and slid it past the junior netminder to put the Dutchwomen up 2-0.

Down 2-0, Tomlinson drew a tripping penalty 8:09 into the third period. The Engineers were halfway through the penalty kill when Makenna Thomas had a breakaway opportunity for another RPI shorthanded shot. The junior took a shot that was broken up Arianna Kosawkowski to keep the Union clean sheet alive.

The Engineers continued to battled, taking Selander out of the net with three minutes left in regulation. Six seconds later, Union's Brandy Street was called for hooking, giving RPI a two skater advantage. The Engineers didn't throw away their shot and scored on the power play with 57 seconds left in the third period. Megan Hayes was credited with her first goal of the year off the clean and crisp passes of Blake Orosz and Aly Tremblay.

Tomlinson won the faceoff at center ice that followed and played a puck across the crease of the Union goal, but just missed a streaking Repaci. With an empty net, Tomlinson played the puck to Repaci with 26 seconds left for a final shot that went wide.

Francis (6-10-2) was credited with the win on 25 saves while Selander (7-14-5) picked up the loss on 22 saves.

Union's win was the first time the Dutchwomen have taken an ECACH conference game from the Engineers with this being their first win over RPI since October 20, 2012.

Rensselaer and Union are back in action tomorrow at 3pm for the Inaugural Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.
