ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's basketball team outscored Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by 11 points in the fourth quarter to come-from-behind and defeat the Engineers, 57-49, in a Liberty League contest at Clark Gymnasium. The Tigers improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference to remain in first place. RPI falls to 6-5 and 2-2.
Rensselaer held a three-point lead (38-35) heading into the final frame, but RIT scored the first nine points for a 44-38 advantage three minutes in. Cori Okado and Jessica Glaz both had a pair of field goals with Okado making a layup and a three-pointer and Glaz scoring two baskets from the paint. LaKissa Martin ended the run with a jumper, but the Tigers answered to go back ahead by six points, 46-40.
The two teams traded baskets again, including a three-pointer by RPI's Sam Krumbhaar to make it a 3-point game, 48-45, but Jessica Shields scored to make it a two-possession game, 50-45. The visitors got to within three points on two more trips down the floor, but RIT got four straight points from Okado, including a pair of free throws, to make it a 7-point lead (56-49) with just over a minute remaining. A free throw from Sydney Frank with under 10 seconds left capped the scoring and the Tigers won their second straight game.
Martin, a junior, led the Engineers with 11 points, while Elizabeth Eckhardt had 10 with four steals. Senior Shaina Iton scored nine points with a game-high 10 rebounds for RPI, which shot 32.8% (20 of 61) from the field. Rensselaer forced 20 turnovers and had 13 steals.
RIT, which forced 22 turnovers, was paced by Glaz's 17 points and 16 more from Tara Lynch, who added seven rebounds. Okado finished with nine points and six assists with three steals. The Tigers, who travel to No. 21 Ithaca College on Tuesday (6pm), made 40.7% (22 of 54) of their shots, including 50% (12 of 24) in the second half.
Rensselaer hosts William Smith College in a conference game on Tuesday at 6pm at East Campus Arena.
