TROY, N.Y. - The seventh-ranked William Smith women's soccer team received goals from Sarah Olick-Sutphen and Merilyn Hinrichs to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Herons improve to 11-2 overall (7-0 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 4-7-2 (1-3-2 Liberty League).
After an evenly played opening half hour, William Smith struck for the game's first goal in the 33rd minute. Genevieve Carpenter sent a cross in from the right side that was headed home by Olick-Sutphen from just outside the six.
Hinrichs doubled the visitors' lead in the 48th minute, when she launched a shot from distance that beat RPI junior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons. The tally, which was her second of the year, drew an assist from Megan Barwick.
RPI's best chance to score came 15 minutes into the game, when freshman Whitney Wisnow ripped a 30-yard shot that was stopped and held by William Smith goalkeeper Veronica Romines.
The Herons finished with a 13-5 advantage in shots, including 8-4 on goal. Romines (7-0) had four saves for the shutout, while Lyons (4-7-2) made six stops.
Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Mount Holyoke for a non-league contest (6pm). William Smith hosts Vassar on Saturday (1pm).
