TROY, N.Y. – Five different players found the back of the net as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team defeat Hartwick College, 5-0, on Tuesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-8-1, while the Hawks drop to 0-10-0.
Sophomore center back
Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) opened the scoring in the ninth minute, when he headed home a corner kick service from classmate
Michael Harten (Merrick, NY/Stanford H. Calhoun).
RPI doubled its lead in the 26th minute after building up the right side. Junior
Dillon Ashong (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) sent a first time cross into the penalty area that was partially cleared by the Hawks defense. Freshman
Paul Silva (Wayne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) collected the loose ball and beat one defender, before curling a right-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Fellow rookie
Shaye Sealy (Katy, TX/University of Nebraska High School) then potted his first RPI goal in the 59th minute, hitting a half volley, with top spin, that whirled past Hartwick freshman goalkeeper Jack Riordan (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg) and into the left side of the goal.
Rensselaer pushed its lead to 4-0, when senior
Sean Larkin (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) tapped home a rebound from close range, after a shot from junior
Matt Menendez (North Port, FL/North Port) was pushed aside by Riordan. Larkin swooped in from the left side of the penalty area for the easy finish.
Sophomore
Tommaso Valagussa (Arlington, MA/Arlington) capped the scoring for the Engineers in the 82nd minute, burying a free kick from just outside the left corner of the 18. His right-footed shot skipped into the right side-netting for a 5-0 lead. The tally was his second goal on the year.
Junior captain
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) made one save over the opening 66 minutes to pick up the win in goal. Freshman
Jake Lapierre (Winslow, ME/Winslow) was not forced into action over the final 24 minutes. Riordan had nine saves for the visitors.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday afternoon for a Liberty League clash with Ithaca College at East Campus Stadium (4pm). Hartwick hosts Bryant & Stratton College on Saturday (7pm).
