TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Lovisa Selander made 30 saves and junior
Blake Orosz scored her first goal of the year to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers move to 0-2-1, while the Crusaders are now 0-1-2.
Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) turned away 17 Crusaders attempts in the third period and overtime, helping to preserve the tie. Her counterpart, sophomore Julia Pelletier (Pelham, NH/Worcester Academy) had 28 stops, including 12 in the first period alone.
After a scoreless opening frame, in which RPI held a 12-5 shot advantage, Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) got the hosts on the board at 15:56 of the second. Classmate
Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) found senior
Josefine Hansen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Shattuck St. Mary's) at the blue line for a slap shot that was stopped by Pelletier. Orosz swooped in and buried the rebound from close range. The power play tally was her first of the season.
The Engineers nearly doubled their lead late in the second, when senior
Taylor Schwalbe (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's) was left alone in the low slot, but her one-timer was held by Pelletier. Rensselaer continued to own the shots on goal edge through two periods, 22-13.
Five minutes into the third, Selander made pair of saves on the penalty kill, denying Holy Cross junior Rachel Moore (Falmouth, MA/Boston College) on the doorstep, after a shot from the right point by Victoria Young (Hanson, MA/Tabor Academy) was knocked down just outside the crease.
The Crusaders had another chance midway through the period. Again, on the man-advantage, senior Maeve Reilly (Ridgefield, CT/Hartford Wolfpack) was stopped on a one-time attempt from between the circles, as Selander pinned the attempt against her chest protector.
Holy Cross eventually did draw even at 11:54 of the third, converting on a 2-on-1 chance. Senior Amanda Kewer (Oakedale, CT/Pomfret School) took a shot from the right circle that was blocked away by Selander, but into the path of an RPI defender and into the net.
The visitors continued to press as regulation came to a close, outshooting the Engineers, 15-5, in the final stanza. Holy Cross also held a 3-2 shot edge in overtime, but neither team was able to break the deadlock.
RPI is back on the ice next weekend, when it visits Robert Morris for a two-game series, beginning on Friday afternoon (3:05pm). The Crusaders open Hockey East play next weekend at Providence and UConn on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
