Men's Hockey Upended by Clarkson

Golden Knights score four times in the third en route to 6-0 victory

TROY, N.Y. – Juniors Nico Sturm and Greg Moro combined for five points to lead the Clarkson University men's hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 4-2-0 overall (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 2-4-0 (2-1-0 ECAC Hockey).

Moro (Edmonton, AB/Llyodminster Bobcats) helped set up each of Clarkson's first three tallies, including the only goal in the opening frame. His shot from the left point was tipped home by freshman Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO/North York Rangers) with 34.6 seconds on the clock. A secondary assist went to sophomore Grant Cooper (Cornwall, ON/Cornwall Colts).

The Golden Knights made it 2-0 at 17:43 of the second, when Sturm (Augsburg, Germany/Tri-City Storm) drove the net from the right wing boards and flipped a shot past RPI sophomore netminder Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) for the first of his two goals on the night. The marker came just seconds after Clarkson had finished killing off its first penalty of the contest.

Sturm then made it 3-0, just 54 seconds into the third. Once again rushing up the right side, his centering pass caromed off an RPI defenseman's stick and over the goal line. Helpers on Sturm's second of the game and third of the year went to Moro and freshman Brian Hurley (Dellwood, MN/Chicago Steel).

Sophomore Jack Jacome (Caledon, ON/Georgetown Raiders) netted an unassisted goal at 2:18 of the third, before junior Haralds Egle (Liepaia, Latvia/Chicago Steel) made it 5-0 at 15:15. Sophomore Kevin Charyszyn (Jamison, PA/Waterloo Blackhawks) capped the scoring with just under four minutes to play.

Clarkson junior goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN/Tri-City Storm) made 34 saves for the shutout, including all 16 shots he faced in the third period, as the Engineers outshot the Golden Knights, 34-26. Marshall had 20 stops at the other end of the ice. Clarkson went 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Engineers were 0 for 4.

Senior Brady Wiffen (St. Mary's, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks), sophomore Donovan Ott (Lebanon, PA/Johnstown Tomahawks) and freshman Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ/Lone Star Brahmas) all had a team-high four shots for the hosts.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow night, when they host St. Lawrence University at the Houston Field House (7pm). Clarkson visits No. 17 Union College (7pm).
