Ines Ortea combined for 43 points as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated The Sage Colleges, 65-56, in a non-league women's basketball game at the East Campus Arena. The victory puts RPI at 4-1, while the loss is the first of the year for the Gators (2-1).
RPI led 31-24 at the half and despite a pair of strong runs in the second half were able to hold off the Gators. Martin, a senior forward, finished with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Ortea, a junior guard, added 20 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Sage senior guard Emily Parslow had a solide night as she recorded her 1,000th career point in the early minutes of the first quarter and registered a game-best 24 points after making eight three pointers. She had 18 first half points and six in the second to become the seventh player in school history to collect her 1,000th career point. She now has 1,019 points to rank seventh all-time. Junior forward Megan Flynn added eight points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.
The Gators face non-league foe Middlebury College on November 29 at 7pm, while RPI returns to action on November 25 against Wheaton College (MA) at 1pm in Troy.
