Men's Basketball Posts 84-76 Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tom Horvat scored 20 points and three others reached double figures as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team defeated Elmira College 84-76 in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn Rochester Downtown Tournament, hosted by the University of Rochester. Horvat, a senior guard who scored 23 points on Saturday, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Engineers, who are now 3-2, scored its first nine points on three-point shots, including two from sophomore Patrick Mahoney, and built an 18-5 lead six minutes into the contest. Mahoney had eight points and Horvat six in that span.

The lead remained double digits for the next six minutes, with RPI getting as far ahead as 18 points (29-11) on a Mahoney three at the halfway mark. Elmira eventually got to within six points, including with 4:11 to play (35-29), but Marcus Giese and Andreas Kontopidis both scored in the paint to push Rensselaer's advantage back to 10 points. 

RPI shot 51.4% from the floor (18 of 35), including 7 of 18 from three-point range (38.9%), while holding the Soaring Eagles to 32.3% (10 of 31) and 14.3% (2 of 14) on the other end in the first half. Mahoney was 5 of 7 for 13 points in 13 minutes.

The Engineers went on to hold a double digit lead throughout the majority of the second half, including a 19-point margin (75-56) with approximately five minutes to play. Elmira scored 16 of the final 22 points for the final margin.

Horvat led all players with his 20 points, which included five three pointers. He also had six rebounds, six assists and a steal in 28 minutes. Kontopidis finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Mahoney scored 18 with three boards and two assists. Giese had 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, a steal and five blocked shots.

Justin Porrett led the Soaring Eagles, who are now 1-5, with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists on his way to an All-Tournament Team selection. Jeremy Every also had 17 points, including 11 of 13 from the free throw line.

Elmira plays again on Wednesday against Keuka (7pm), while the Engineers travel to Clarkson for a Liberty League game on Friday at 7pm.
