Lowell Pushes Past Men's Hockey

River Hawks score four straight goals after falling behind in second period to win 5-2

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Ryan Lohin led a balanced scoring attack with a goal and an assist as the University of Massachusetts Lowell men's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the River Hawks improve to 7-6-1 overall, while the Engineers drop to 4-7-0.

UMass Lowell was the beneficiary of puck that was shot, inadvertently, into the RPI net from the offensive zone at 6:50 of the first period. Freshman blueliner Jon McDonald was credited with his second goal of the weekend after being the last River Hawks player to have touched the puck.

RPI drew even (1-1) at 16:34 of the frame, when junior Jacob Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) finished off a chance on the rush, after taking a return feed from freshman Ottoville Leppanen, just inside the left circle. Hayhurst snapped home his second goal of the season, with a secondary helper going to freshman Jakub Lacka (Bratislava, Slovakia/Central Illinois Flying Aces).

The Engineers took the lead at 7:00 of the second period, capitalizing on a 4-on-3 power play opportunity. Junior captain Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers) lifted a pass into the middle of the slot for Leppanen, who found junior Todd Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) all alone in the left circle for the one-timer, which he buried past UMass Lowell junior goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, ON).

Junior Colin O'Neill (Odenton, MD) pulled the River Hawks into a 2-2 at 10:15 of the second, stealing the puck in front of the RPI cage and beating freshman netminder Owen Savory (Guelph, ON/St. Catharines Falcons), glove side, for his second goal of the season.

UMass Lowell then took the lead for good at 18:53 of the stanza, on senior captain Connor Wilson's (Calgary, AB) fourth tally of the year. Junior defenseman Mattias Goransson (Stottsbron, Sweden) found Wilson free in the right circle for the one-time finish and a 3-2 advantage for the visitors. Lohin (Chadds Ford, PA) picked up the secondary assist on the play.

Lohin made it 4-2 at 7:29 of the third, receiving a pass from the left point and slapping a shot past Savory for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Chris Shutz (Keller, TX) added an insurance tally with under seven minutes to play to cap the scoring.

Wall (5-4-1) finished with 18 saves for the River Hawks, while Savory (1-1-0) had a career-high 30 stops for the Engineers. RPI went 1 for 4 on the power play, while UMass Lowell was 0 for 1.

The Engineers are back in action when they visit No. 8 Notre Dame for a two-game series on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm). Lowell is off until December 7 and 8, when it plays a home-and-home series with Boston University.
