TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Kira Bombay stopped all 18 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Brown University, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-5-2 overall (1-2-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 5-3-0 (2-3-0 ECAC Hockey).
Making only her seventh career start for RPI, Bombay (Orleans, ON/Nepean Wildcats) was forced to make just four saves in the first period, before turning away seven each in the second and third for her first collegiate victory and shutout.
Sophomore
Lauren Severson (Rockford, IL/Madison Capitals) provided the contest's only goal – a second period power play tally – which drew assists from classmate
Madeleine Burnett (London, ON/Bluewater Hawks) and senior
Taylor Schwalbe (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's). Severson took a feed in the left circle, before picking out the top right corner of the net for her fist collegiate tally.
Junior
Blake Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) had chances to double the RPI lead in the second and third periods, but missed the cage on both occasions. Classmate
Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) saw her backhand chance gobbled up by Brown freshman netminder Hayley Kliczko (Niles, IL/Maine East) with 12 minutes left in the third.
RPI limited the Bears to just two power play shots on three chances, while peppering the Brown net with 14 shots on its five opportunities. The Engineers finished with a 25-18 shot advantage.
Bombay (1-0-0) turned away all 16 shots she faced in relief against then-No. 3 Clarkson on November 3 – her only previous action this season. She went 0-5-1 with a 2.06 goals against average and a .939 save percentage a season ago. Kliczko (1-2-0) had 24 stops for the visitors, including nine in each of the final two frames.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Yale University (3pm). Brown visits Union College tomorrow (3pm).
