POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Clarkson University women's basketball team got 44 points from its three seniors and the Golden Knights defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 66-58, in the season finale for both teams in a Liberty League contest at Alumni Gym.
Devin Sorell scored 27 points, Madison Shea had 13 and Raenna Dunn scored four to help Clarkson improve to 10-13 overall and 5-13 in the conference with a victory on its Senior Day. The Engineers, who got 18 points apiece from Elizabeth Eckhardt and Ines Ortea, finish at 11-14 and 7-11. Rensselaer lost eight of its final nine games - all in the league - and finished seventh in the conference standings, one spot out of the post-season.
Eckhardt, a junior guard, carried the Engineers to an early 8-7 lead three minutes into the contest by hitting on a pair of three-pointers and a layup. Ortea, a sophomore, scored her first two points on free throws for a 10-9 edge before Sorell answered with two from the charity stripe. Eckhardt then had five straight points and Ortea scored two more from the foul line for a 7-0 run and a 17-11 lead with 2:35 to play in the opening frame. Clarkson countered with three consecutive three-pointers to end the quarter with a 20-17 lead.
RPI's LaKissa Martin started the second with a three-pointer to tie the score, but the Golden Knights rattled off another nine straight for a 29-20 edge midway through the quarter. RPI eventually pulled to within three points, but Clarkson scored six straight points for a nine-point lead, 38-29, a minute into the third quarter. The difference remained at least two possessions in the Golden Knights' favor the rest of the contest - including after RPI went on a 9-0 run to make the score 51-45 with a minute left in the third.
The two teams traded seven-point runs in the fourth quarter before Sorell made four free throws and Dunn hit on a layup.
Kate Goodell, a senior, had Rensselaer's final points as she made a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left. She finished with six points, while classmate Shaina Iton had three points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Eckhardt connected on four three pointers, while Ortea added five rebounds.
