WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Rensselaer went down three runs in the fifth inning, but the Engineers rallied to win their final game of spring break 6-5 over Franklin & Marshall (FMU) Friday afternoon.
Franklin & Marshall (4-5-1) jumped to an early in the bottom of the third when Kengo Kawahara scored off a Dan Marano double to right field. J.J. Freeman then put the Diplomats up 2-0 by scoring on a sacrifice fly from Lincoln Pantell.
In the bottom of the fourth, FMU's Danny Blugis was in scoring position at second with one out on the board. Justin Cavegn then hit a shallow ball to centerfield that Rensselaer's (4-5)
DJ Morone made a running catch for. Monroe then made the heads up double play to get Blugis out at second before he could take tag up.
The Diplomats added a third run in the bottom of the fifth when Kawahara scored on a fielding error.
The Engineers ended FMU's shutout in the top of the sixth when
Austin Lawrence scored on a wild pitch.
Richard Drum made the score 3-2 off an
Eric Zeppa double down the left field line. RPI then tied the game when Busby crossed the plate off a
J.T. Sawyer single through the right side.
In the top of the seventh, Rensselaer took its first lead of the game when Monroe scored during a Lawrence double to centerfield. Lawrence then put the Engineers up 5-3 when he scored during an
Ethann Meister sacrifice fly to center field. One innings later,
Michael Arboleda made the score 6-3 when
Christian Spagnuola double to left center field.
The Diplomats cut down the lead to 6-4 when Matthew Kann scored an unearned run off a Blugis RBI.
In the bottom of the ninth, FMU rallied a Kawahara run during a fielding error to make it a one run game with two outs. A Kann single placed runners at second and first for the Diplomats, but
Nick Pacifico recorded his third strikeout to of the inning to complete the win.
Rensselaer's
Erick Zecha (2-0) was credited with the win with four strikeouts with Pacifico recording his first save of the season. The Engineer staff of Zecha, Pacifico,
Christopher Palmiero, and
Chris Grome held the Diplomats to two earned runs while combining for 11 K's despite seven RPI errors. FMU's Eric Dyke (0-1) picked up the loss in relief with a one strikeout effort.
Leading Rensselaer on offense were Lawrence (2-5, two runs, RBI) Drum (2-4, run) and Spagnuola (2-4, RBI) while Kawahara (2-3, two BB, three runs), Freeman (2-5, run) and Kann (2-5, run) led the Diplomats.
After a 4-3 trip in Florida, Rensselaer is set to return to action up north on Mar. 21 as the Engineers play host to MCLA at 4pm.
