KINGSTON, N.Y. - For the fourth straight game, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team allowed five or fewer goals as the Engineers defeated Bard College in the Liberty League opener for both teams. RPI has won four straight games after a season-opening loss, while the Raptors fall to 2-3.
Senior goalie
Parker Smith made five saves for the win for the Engineers, who defeated Montclair State (12-3), Babson College (8-4) and UMass Boston (26-5) before beating Bard. The reigning conference goalie of the week allowed five goals in 52:18 before being relieved by
Jack Cusworth (0 saves).
Offensively, four players had multiple points for RPI, led by freshman
Connor Schnapp's five goals and one assist.
Siyon Lowe (2 goals, 1 assist) and
Owen Putman (1 goal, 2 assists) both had three points and
Jordan Gans had two on a pair of markers.Â
The Engineers, who were tied 2-2 after the first quarter, started to open up the margin in the second when they doubled-up the Raptors, 4-2. Rensselaer scored the only three goals of the third quarter for a 9-4 lead and built it to 13-4 with a Gans goal with 6:03 to play.Â
RPI, which is home next Saturday against nationally-ranked Ithaca College, outshot Bard 61-24, including 43-10 on goal, and had a 40-27 margin in ground balls.Â
Lyle Healey stopped 29 shots for the Raptors, who won 9 of 22 faceoffs.
