Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 16 Ithaca on Saturday

GAMEDAY (March 22, 2018): The Engineers (4-1; 1-0 Liberty League) play their first home league game when they welcome No. 16 Ithaca College (4-1; 1-0 Liberty League) to East Campus Stadium for a 1pm contest.

NEW LEAGUE FOE: The Liberty League is a new conference for the Bombers, who had played in the Empire 8 prior to this season.

ROLLING: Rensselaer dropped its first contest of the season, but has since won each of its last four games, including three away from ECAV Stadium.

DEFENSE: After surrendering 18 goals in their first game (at Keene State), the Engineers have held their next four opponents to a total of 17 goals.

LAST TIME OUT: On Saturday, RPI defeated Bard, 14-5, in the Liberty League opener for both teams ... Senior goalie Parker Smith made five saves for the win, allowing five goals in 52:18 before being relieved by Jack Cusworth (0 saves) ... Offensively, four players had multiple points, led by freshman Connor Schnapp's five goals and one assist ... Siyon Lowe (2 goals, 1 assist) and Owen Putman (1 goal, 2 assists) both had three points and Jordan Gans had two tallies ... RPI outshot Bard 61-24, including 43-10 on goal, and held a 40-27 margin in ground balls.

RECOGNIZED: Rensselaer student-athlete Connor Schnapp was selected as the Men's Lacrosse Offensive Performer of the Week by the Liberty League for his efforts in two games last week ... The freshman attack helped the Engineers to a pair of victories, 26-5 over UMass Boston and 14-5 at Liberty League foe Bard ... He led the team in goals (7), assists (3) and points (10) while registering 14 shots and a ground ball.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: Senior goalie Parker Smith was selected to the conference's Weekly Honor Roll on Monday ... He backstopped two victories by making eight saves on 13 shots in 82:18 for a 3.65 goals against average and a .615 save percentage ... Against UMass Boston, he had three saves on three shots in the first 30 minutes of the game while picking up two ground balls ... He then stopped five of 10 shots in 52:18 against the Raptors ... Smith made two saves in the first quarter and one in each of the three subsequent periods.

ALL-TIME VS. ITHACA: The Engineers are 7-26 all-time against the Bombers, including 5-11 in Troy ... The two schools were previously league foes in the ICAC with Ithaca holding a 20-3 margin in those conference contests.

LAST SEASON: In its home debut, fourth-ranked Ithaca scored the final six goals to pull away from 12th-ranked Rensselaer for a non-conference win, 14-9 ... Jack Shumway netted six points, finding the back of the net five times and adding an assist ... Midfielder Josh Della Puca added two goals and three assists, while Jake Cotton finished with three assists in addition to the eventual game-winning tally ... Jack Deragon registered 11 saves, which included eight during the second half ... Ithaca shut out the Engineers over the final 20:27 of game action ... Breanainn McNeally scored three times with two assists and Lucas Bastarache tallied twice with a helper for RPI, which got 18 saves from David Gibbs.

ITHACA TO DATE: The Bombers are off to a perfect start with two wins coming at home, two on the road and two in neutral site contests ... Ithaca's most recent contest was on Wednesday when they won at Oneonta, 13-5.

RPI'S CAPTAINS: The 2018 Engineers are being led by senior captains Matthew Gilman, Oliver Kaija and Zach Lukas ... This is the first season as a captain for Gilman and Lukas and the second for Kaija.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Rensselaer's roster features eight seniors, 14 juniors, seven sophomores and 15 freshmen.
