Colton Point posts 23-save shutout as Raiders advance with 2-0 win

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore goaltender Colton Point registered a 23-save shutout to lead the Colgate University men's hockey team to 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday night at Class of '65 Arena. With the win, the Raiders take the best-of-three series, 2-1, and advance to the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals next weekend.

Point (North Bay, ON/Carleton Place Canadiens) turned away all 14 shots he faced in the third period to help preserve the victory. He also made three saves in the first and six in the second. RPI freshman Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) had 30 stops on the night, with 13 coming the first and 14 in the second.

Following a scoreless opening frame, the Raiders potted a power play goal at 5:54 to take a 1-0 lead. Junior defenseman Willie Brooks (Locust, NJ/Carleton Place Canadiens) found freshman Josh McKechney (Calgary, AB/Brooks Bandits) crash the net for a one-time tap in at the back door.

Colgate held a 27-9 shot advantage through two periods, thanks in part to five power play opportunities.

RPI's best chance to score in the opening two frames came when freshman Donovan Ott (Lebanon, PA/Johnstown Tomahawks) ripped a shot off the right post from close range.

The Raiders doubled their lead at 3:05 of the third, when freshman Evan Tschumi (Calgary, AB/Whitecourt Wolverines) snapped home his first collegiate tally off of a centering feed from junior Rory McGuire (Bracebridge, ON/Kingston Voyaguers). A secondary assist was credited to junior Adam Dauda (Kitchner, ON/Pembroke Lumber Kings).

Rensselaer lifted Marshall with four minutes to play, while also on a man advantage. They turned in a handful of chances on goal, but Point kept them out. Colgate also missed the open RPI cage on a pair of occasions.

Colgate finished 1 for 6 on the power play, while RPI was 0 for 4.

The Raiders visit 10th-ranked Clarkson University for a best-of-three quarterfinal series next weekend, while the Engineers conclude their season at 6-27-4.
