CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore
Veronica DeStefano went a combined 4 for 8 with three runs scored to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to an opening day split of their two contests at Legends Way on Friday. The Engineers fell to Penn State-Behrend, 5-4, in nine innings, before topping Wheanton (IL), 3-1 to open at 1-1 on the year.
In Game 1 against the Lions scored two runs in the top of the ninth, before withstanding an RPI rally in the bottom half, to win 5-4. With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Katie Gozzard singled home the go-ahead run, before Mackenzie McIntire doubled the PSU-Behrend advantage with a hard single to center.
Rensselaer fought back with a run in the bottom of the frame, when DeStefano doubled into the left field corner, but classmate
Cam Caswell popped into a game-ending double play to end the game.
Alex Bupp (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing two unearned runs on four hits over 6.0 innings. She struck out seven without a walk. Senior
Sarah Harms (0-1) took the tough luck loss, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings.
The Lions opened up a 3-0 lead after two innings, taking advantage of a pair of RPI errors, before a Kristen Kargol sacrifice fly and a Gozzard RBI-single.
RPI clawed back with two in the bottom of the third, as senior
Christine White and sophomore
Allie Hunt each drove in runs with base hits. The Engineers then pulled even at 3-3 in the fifth, when Hunt executed a squeeze bunt that plated Caswell from third.
Sophomore
Jaime Cleasby took the no-decision, allowing three runs (1 earned) on five hits over 6.0 innings. She struck out three and walked three. Jillian Williams, who started for PSU-Behrend, gave up two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. She was also 1 for 2 at the plate with a run scored.
White was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with a run batted in, while Caswell and Hunt were each 1 for 3.
RPI is back on the diamond tomorrow morning, when it takes on Catholic University and Wartburg at 9am and 11:30am, respectively.
