Liberty League Standings
POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior
Cliff Kigar tied the game with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter and then tallied the game-winner with just 33 seconds left as the No. 17 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Clarkson University, 12-11, in a Liberty League game. With the victory, RPI's fourth straight, the Engineers improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference. They sewed up the second seed in the league tournament and will host a semifinals game on May 2.
Clarkson held an 11-9 lead with just over four minutes to play, but RPI rattled off the last three goals to pull out the one-goal victory on the road.
Jordan Gans scored off an assist from
Zach Lukas with 3:48 to play, just 34 seconds after a Kinghts' goal, before Kigar scored man-up, with Lukas earning the assist, and even-strength, with
Lucas Bastarache setting him up.
Clarkson and RPI traded two goals apiece in the first quarter, and both added four more goals in the second stanza for a 6-6 tie at the half. The Engineers outscored the Green and Gold 3-2 in the third quarter to hold a 9-8 lead through 45 minutes, but Clarkson scored three straight, including two from Shane Kilday in 22 seconds, for an 11-9 lead with 7:28 to play.
Kigar finished with three goals and an assist, while Lukas scored once with three helpers. Bastarache had three assists and
Matthew Gilman scored twice with one assist. Gans tallied twice. Freshman
Brian Doughty earned the win, stopping two shots in the final 15 minutes.
Parker Smith made 10 saves.
RPI outshot the Knights 40-34, while Clarkson controlled the ground balls 29-21.
Kilday led the Knights with three goals, while senior Sam Groves and sophomore Conor Bartlett tallied two goals apiece. Sophomore Ryan Gabriel won 17 of 25 faceoffs while also recording five ground balls. Colin Holt made 12 saves in the Clarkson goal.
The Golden Knights, at 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League, closes out the regular season at Ithaca on Wednesday. Rensselaer hosts nationally-ranked St. Lawrence University on Wednesday at 4pm.
