Softball Extends Win Streak to Six

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Veronica DeStefano led Rensselaer with four hits, five runs, three RBI's and three stolen bases in the Engineers' Liberty League sweep over Clarkson at Doris Robison Field. Game one ended 7-1 while the game two final was 11-1 after five innings.

Adding to DeStefano's 4-for-8 effort on offense were seniors Christine White and Rebecca Kienz. White was 4-for-8 with four RBI's and one run while Kienz went 4-for-6 with four stolen bases and two runs. Rensselaer's Sarah Harms and Jaime Cleasby each picked up a complete-game win in the circle for the Engineers.

RPI took the first lead of game one in the top of the first when DeStefano scored on a two out, single from White. Clarkson responded in the bottom of the second when pinch runner Rylee LeBourbeau tied the game off a Sam Mennig double to right field.

In the top of the third, the Engineers took their second lead of the game with the DeStafano-White connection with the pair recording their second run and RBI, respectively, on a single through the left side.

Up 2-1, Rensselaer added a third run when Kienz scored off a DeStefano single to centerfield. Allie Hunt then made the score 4-1 when the sophomore scored off a Cam Caswell single to right field.

RPI extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth when Kyla Anderson and Maddie Provencher scored off a Hunt single up the middle. The Engineers kept the scoring going in the top of the sixth when Victoria Greco scored off an Anderson sacrifice fly to to centerfield.

With score favoring Rensselaer 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Harms, the RPI pitcher, and the Engineer defense retired the side for the sixth time to garner the win.

Harms (13-4) was credited with the complete game win with a career-high seven strikeouts and three hits against. The Golden Knights' Leah Allen (2-4) picked up the loss with three K's.

DeStefano paced the Rensselaer offense going 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI and two stolen bases.

In game two, Clarkson was able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. Cleasby, RPI's pitcher, and the Engineer defense were able to record three outs in a row to keep the Golden Knights off the board.

Rensselaer followed up their first inning defensive effort in the top of the second with five runs off RBI's from Provencher, DeStefano and Caswell.

Down 5-0 in the bottom of the third, Clarkson ended Cleasby shutout when Summer Lancette scored off an RBI from Kat Plescow.

The Engineers extended their lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth when DeStefano and White scored on RBI singles form White and Anderson, respectively. Rensselaer tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the fifth with RBI's from Caswell and White.

With RPI up 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Knights needed to score three runs to keep the contest going into the sixth inning. However, Cleasby and the Engineer defense retired the side to enact the eight-run mercy rule.

Cleasby (6-3) was credited with the complete-game win with four strikeouts and four hits against. Clarkson's Maggie Stark (1-9) picked up the loss with one K and six earned runs against.

Rensselaer currently tops the Liberty League with a 9-1 conference record. The Engineers will play host to Skidmore in a conference doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
