TROY, N.Y. – Seven players notched two hits apiece to pace the New York University baseball team to a 15-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the series finale on Sunday at Robison Field. With the win, the Violets improve to 20-4 overall and sweep the three-game set, while the Engineers drop to 11-11.
NYU scored in all but the third and eighth innings, getting things started with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first. Sophomore (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill) Coltrane Tait and junior Cooper Halpern (Pacific Palisades, CA/Crossroads School for Arts and Science) each delivered RBI-hits with two outs in the inning.
A solo homer by Jack Walter (Lubbock, TX/Lubbock) in the top of the second made it a 3-0 game, before RPI got one back in the bottom half on an RBI-ground from freshman
Jimmy Woods (Burlington, CT/IMG Academy), which scored classmate
Richard Drum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) from third.
The Violets tacked on one run in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 6-1 advantage. A three-run home run off the bat of junior Colman Hendershot (Lubbock, TX/Coronado) in the sixth pushed the visitors' advantage to 9-1, before a three-run seventh made it 12-1. Walter had an RBI-single in the scoring barrage.
NYU plated three more runs in the top of the ninth, including run-scoring fielder's choice grounds from Hendershot and senior Jonathan Iaione (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards).
Sophomore lefthander Ford Ladd (Longmont, CO/Nowit) improved to 4-2 on the hill, allowing a run on seven hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked three. Four relief pitchers combined to no-hit RPI over the final 3.1 innings, including senior Matthew Millus (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen Catholic), who finished off the game by hurling a scoreless ninth.
For the Engineers, sophomore
Erick Zecha (Keene, NH/Keene) gave up nine runs (4 earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks. Freshman
Ryan Yerby (Montara, CA/Half Moon Bay) surrendered a pair of hits with a strikeout in a scoreless eighth inning.
RPI is back on the diamond next Saturday, when it visits Bard College for a Liberty League doubleheader. The Engineers host the Raptors on the following day (12pm). NYU visits Case Western Reserve University for a three-game series next weekend, beginning on Friday (3pm).
