AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - The Union College baseball team scored 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen, who won by scores of 11-1 and 17-4, improve to 27-10 overall (17-6 Liberty League), while the Engineers conclude the regular season with a 19-20 record (12-11 Liberty League).
Union opened Game 1 with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Kelly delivered a two-run triple to right center, before Sean Cullen plated the fourth run of the frame with an infield hit.
After scoring a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth, the Engineers scratched across a single run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by freshman
Hudson Livesey.
The Dutchmen opened up the game in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Jake Vesling.
Bill Christopher (3-0) went the distance on the hill, allowing a run on three hits. He struck out four and walked one in 7.0 innings.
Erick Zecha (4-4) suffered the loss for RPI, giving up five runs (4 earned) on four hits over 4.2 innings.Â
In Game 2, Union scored at least three runs in four of the first five innings to open up a 16-4 lead by the bottom of the fifth.Â
A six-run bottom of the first once again got the Dutchmen out to a fast start. Nate Olson delivered the biggest blow of the inning, clearing the bases with a single to center.
RPI pulled two runs back in the each of the second and third innings to make it a 6-4 game.
Richard Drum and
Noah Normyle each had run-scoring groundouts, while
Nick Busby had a sacrifice fly.
Union plated three in the bottom of the third, before scoring three more in the fourth. A four-run fifth, which included a Jack Koch two-run single and an RBI-double from Zach Twitchell.
Josh Garber (3-0) allowed four runs on four his over 5.0 innings to pick up the victory for the Dutchmen.
Griffin Kelley took the loss for RPI. The Engineers used nine pitchers in the contest, including freshmen
Ryan Yerby,
Thomas Neuman and
Michael Castello, who all worked scoreless outings.
The Engineers are the fifth-seed in next week's Liberty League Tournament and will face RIT in a one-game "play-in" contest to begin play on Thursday. The University of Rochester is the top-seed and host of the tournament.Â
