TROY, N.Y. – Freshman
Billy Chissoe netted the second half equalizer to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with SUNY Oneonta, on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the tie, the Engineers are now 2-2-1, while the Red Dragons are 2-1-2.
Chissoe (Gig Harbor, WA/Charles Wright Academy) settled an aerial ball at the top of the penalty area in the 77th minute, before taking a sharp touch past an Oneonta defender and slotting home his second goal in as many games. The tally leveled the score at one apiece.
After neither team was able the break the deadlock over the final 13 minutes of regulation, the match went to overtime.
RPI's best opportunity in the extra session came in the 100th minute, when Chissoe got on the end of a lob from a tough angle outside the six, but was still able to rip a shot on goal that Oneonta senior goalkeeper Nicholas Giordano (East Northport, NY/Commack) was forced to parry away for a corner.
The Red Dragons registered their only extra time attempt in the 110th minute – a try from sophomore Roberto Ventura (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) that was blocked by the defense.
The visitors delivered the first two scoring chances of the game, beginning with senior Justin Cebollero (Commack, NY/Commack), who got on the end of a Nicholas Plate (Miller Place, NY/Sachem North) corner kick in the seventh minute, but his header rose over the crossbar.
Junior Witman Hernandez (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) then saw his first-time attempt in the 14th minute whistle just wide of the post.
RPI's best first half chance came minutes later, when junior
Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) made a driving run up the left wing, before turning towards goal. Giordano was equal to the task, turning Betterly's shot away for a corner.
Oneonta took the lead in the 68th minute on Ventura's second goal of the season. Junior Witman Hernandez (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) sent a low cross into the area for Ventura, who found himself all alone for the easy tap in.
The Red Dragons finished the game with a 12-10 edge in shots, with the shots on goal being all square at 4-4. RPI won the corner battle, 5-3. Engineers junior
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Giordano each had four saves.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday, when it visits SUNY Potsdam at 1pm. Oneonta hosts Vassar on Saturday at 2pm.
