ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Jake Adams and Zein Mohamed each tallied to lead the Nazareth College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium. With the win, the Golden Flyers improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Engineers drop to 0-2.
Adams opened the scoring in the sixth minute, jumping on a rebound to stick home his first goal of the season from short range. Mohamed's shot from outside the penalty box was stopped, but not held by Rensselaer junior goalkeeper
Matt LaBranche and Adams was the first one to it for the tap in.
The Engineers found themselves on the front foot for much of the remainder of the opening half, getting numbers in the box for six corner kicks and a handful of long throw-ins by junior centerback
Brandon Pirog. One of those long throws fell to sophomore
Joe Di Miceli in the 37th minute, but his right-footed half volley missed high and wide.
Freshman
Paul Silva danced way through three Golden Flyers defenders in the 39th minute before reaching the end line, but could not get a cross or shot away before Nazareth goalkeeper Brian Wilkin charged and snuffed out the opportunity. Junior Dyland Confair took a crack at goal on a 42nd minute free kick, but the effort from 25 yards fell right into the waiting arms of Wilkin.
RPI continued to provide pressure in the second half, earning eight more corner kicks for a total of 14 in the match - the most by an Engineers side since recording 16 in a 3-0 victory at Bard College on October 12, 2013.
Junior
Matt Menendez got on the end of a Confair cross in the 52nd minute, but Wilkin came off his line to close down the angle, forcing an errant shot.
Nazareth doubled its lead in the 64th minute, when Mohamed received a ball up the left flant from James Walsh, cut across the top of the 18 and curled a right-footed shot just under the crossbar.
A minute later, RPI junior
Austin Betterly latched onto a through ball inside the Nazareth penalty area, but his tight angle shot was pushed aside by Wilkin. On the ensuing corner, a half clearance was fired back in by Silva, but it found the gloves of the Nazareth keeper once again.
More chances came for the Engineers, including a narrow miss off the right foot of freshman
Billy Chissoe in the 76th minute and a glancing header from senior captain
Danny Corridan in the 81st that flew just wide of the right upright.
Rensselaer's final opportunity get on the scoresheet came in the 86th minute, when sophomore
Trevor Bisson was denied by Wilkin a lofted attempt from outside the area.
The Engineers finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots (8-5 on target) and a 14-2 corner edge. Freshman goalkeeper
Luke Brezak made his collegiate debut in relief of LaBranche, making one save over the final 23 minutes of play. Menendez had a game-high three shot attempts off the bench, while six other had two.
RPI is back in action on Saturday, when it hosts SUNY Geneseo at East Campus Stadium (4pm). Nazareth visits Wells College on Wednesday (4:15pm).
