Whitney Wisnom scored the even game-winning goal early in the second half to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bard College in the Liberty League opener for both schools. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-4 overall (1-0 Liberty League), while the Raptors drop to 4-3-1 (0-1 Liberty League).
RPI got on the board in the 15th minute, when senior
Emily Dunn sent a high cross into the middle of the penalty area for junior
Emily Kaplan, who finished first time into right side netting. The goal was Kaplan's first of the year.
The Engineers held Bard without a shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes, while taking nine of their own.Â
Wisnom doubled the visitors' advantage in the 50th minute, slotting home her first collegiate tally from the spot. RPI continued to press at the offensive end, finishing with an 18-8 shot edge, including 8-2 on target.
Bard was able find the scoresheet in the 74th minute, when Dylan McDonald buried a penalty kick of her own. Giuliana Scanni drew the foul in the area, allowing McDonald to pot her fifth goal of the year.
Wisnom finished with nine shots, including three on target. Junior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (3-4) had one save, while Abigail Stanley had five at the other end of the field.
Rensselaer is back in action Wednesday, when it hosts Hartwick at East Campus Stadium (7:15pm). Bard travels to William Smith on Saturday (3pm).
