Plattsburgh State Holds Off Women's Soccer, 1-0

Cardinals ride first half goal to narrow non-league win

TROY, N.Y. - Freshman Kristen Villemaire netted the only goal of the game to lead the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-0, while the Engineers drop to 1-2.

Villemaire (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) rifled a shot over the head of RPI junior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) in the 19th minute, after latching onto a well placed header by sophomore Abigail Seamans (Bolton Landing, NY/Bolton Central) from just outside the 18. Villemaire beat Lyons inside the left post for her third goal of the year.

Plattsburgh held the upper hand through the opening frame, outshooting the hosts, 8-5. The Engineers had a handful shot attempts from distance that were handled by keeper Taylor Adams (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons).

The Cardinals had an opportunity to add to their lead in the 63rd minute, but Lyons came out to turn away a 1-on-1 chance, before junior Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) fired a shot way over the net.

RPI junior Jacqui Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster School) got her head to a corner kick from classmate Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield), but Adams got behind it to make the stop. Five minutes later, sophomore Michelle Lomoz (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) found solid contact on another corner, but the Cardinals were able to get a block her attempt.

Senior Catie Mann (Downington, PA/Downington STEM Academy) nearly chipped the Engineers onto the board in the 79th minute, but Adams, who had taken two hard steps towards the shot, was able to recover just in time to snag the shot while falling backwards.

The Engineers held a 4-2 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes and earned four corners in the contest to Plattsburgh's two. Both Adams and Lyons each registered five saves.

RPI is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Smith College at East Campus Stadium (5pm). the Cardinals visit Middlebury on Wednesday (4pm).
