POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Jackie Cenan scored 24 points with 17 coming in the second half and the Vassar College women's basketball team led throughout as the Brewers defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 67-43 in a Liberty League game.
Vassar, which remains in first place in the conference standings with a 5-1 record (11-2 overall), held a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and a 34-19 edge at halftime. Isa Peczuh had 14 points and Sophie Nick pulled down nine rebounds for the home team in the first 20 minutes. RPI, which drops to 7-6 and 2-4 in the league, saw six student-athletes with points, led by senior
LaKissa Martin, who had four points and five rebounds.
The Brewers came out of the locker room at halftime and scored the first three baskets to take a 21-point lead (40-19) before Martin hit on a layup at the 7:20 mark. Cenan answered by scoring three straight baskets, including a three-pointer, over the next two minutes. Nick finished the 10-0 run with an and-1 for a 50-21 lead.
Sam O'Keefe (jumper) and
Ines Ortea (free throw) got three points back for RPI, but Cenan made a three-pointer to negate Rensselaer's points. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the third quarter and the Engineers went on to hold a 13-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Martin led Rensselaer with 12 points and nine rebounds, along with three steals. Ortea had 11 points with six rebounds and five steals and O'Keefe finished with eight points on 4 of 6 shooting.
Cenan made 8 of 14 shots, including 4 of 6 three pointers, to earn game-high honors. She also had six rebounds and three steals. Peczuh scored 14 points and Nick had eight with a game-high 14 rebounds.
