W. Hockey Falls to No. 6 Clarkson

Special teams leads Golden Knights to 5-1 road league win

TROY, N.Y. – Five different players scored as the sixth-ranked Clarkson University women's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-1, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 15-5-1 overall (6-3-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 7-10-4 (4-5-0 ECAC Hockey).

Graduate student T.T. Cianfarano (Oswego, NY/Quinnipiac Univ.) opened the scoring at 14:11 of the opening frame after receiving an outlet pass from goaltender Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, ON/Ohio State). She skate in from the right point and wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

Clarkson took a 2-0 lead at 8:59 of the second, when junior Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Stanstead Spartans) found senior defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ON/Nepean Wildcats) at the top of the right circle for her second tally of the year. Pozzebon collected the puck quickly and ripped a shot over the right shoulder of RPI senior goaltender Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien).

Two minutes later, the Golden Knights pushed their advantage to 3-0 on a power play goal by senior Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga Chiefs). Pozzebon play the role of distributor this time as she found her classmate at the back post for a one-time finish, after carrying the puck behind the net. Junior Taylor Turnquist (Blaine, MN/Spring Pake Park HS) picked up the secondary assist.

The Engineers netted a power play goal of their own at 8:04 of the third, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Senior Jaimie Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) snapped home a tight angle shot from the right circle for her fourth tally of the season, with assists going to classmate Josefine Hansen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Shattuck St. Mary's) and freshman Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy).

Senior blueliner Emma Keenan (Calgary, AB/Okanagan Hockey Academy) made it a three-goal game (4-1) once again at 13:02 of the third, firing a shot off the post and in from the high slot. Classmate Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ON/Whitby Wolves) and freshman Taylor Sawka (Cochrane, AB/Nepean Jr. Wildcats) earned the helpers on Keenan's second goal of the year.

Clarkson capped the scoring at 16:39 of the third on sophomore Elizabeth Giguere's (Quebec City, PQ/Limoilou Titans) 15th goal of the season, deking her way past Selander for a shorthanded marker.

The Engineers went 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Golden Knights finished 1 for 3. Selander (5-9-4) had 40 saves, with Sauve (13-4-1) stopping 10, before giving way to sophomore Kia Castonguay (Ipswich, MA/Boston Shamrocks), who had eight.

RPI returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts St. Lawrence (3pm). Clarkson visits Union tomorrow (3pm).
