POTSDAM, N.Y. – Greg Moro scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner to lead the 16th-ranked Clarkson University men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at Cheel Arena. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 14-6-0 (5-3-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 6-15-0 (4-7-0 ECAC Hockey).
Sophomore Jack Jacome got the scoring started for the hosts at 10:10 of the opening stanza, when he buried a centering pass from Devin Brosseau. A secondary assist went to Josh Dunne.
Rensselaer drew even at 1-1 late in the frame, on a steal at the offensive blue line by junior
Todd Burgess. Breaking up a Golden Knights pass, Burgess walked into the left circle and ripped a shot past junior goaltender Jake Kielly for his fourth tally of the year. Classmate
Chase Zieky and
Jacob Hayhurst picked up assists on the even strength tally.
Five minutes into the second, the Engineers took a 2-1 lead. Burgess started the play by driving the net from the left corner. The puck hopped off his stick, but fell in the lap of Hayhurst, who stuck home his third goal of the season.
Mike Gornall collected the secondary helper on the go-ahead goal.
Clarkson tied things up with a power play goal at 15:27 of the frame. Moro caught a one-timer cleanly from the top of the left circle and drove it past RPI freshman goaltender
Owen Savory for the first of his two goals on the night. Nick Sturm delivered the primary assist with Aaron Thow providing the secondary.
Moro then gave the Golden Knights the lead (3-2) for good at 6:08 of the third, potting his fifth of the season on the power play. Taking a point-to-point pass, Moro carried the puck to the top of the right circle, before snapping a shot home through a screen.
Brosseau made it 4-2 at 7:11 of the third, before Dunne capped the scoring with an empty-netter with 1:10 to go.
Kielly (14-6-0) finished with 23 saves, including 11 in the opening period. Savory (1-7-0) had 29 stops, with 12 coming in the first. Clarkson was 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Engineers were 0 for 2.
RPI is back on the ice this Wednesday, when it travels to Hartford to face UConn (7pm). The Golden Knights visit Yale and Brown next weekend.
