Men's Hockey Heads to UConn for Midweek Contest

Engineers take on Huskies at XL Center Wednesday (7:05pm)

MIDWEEK TRIP
Rensselaer begins its final week of non-league play on Wednesday night, when it visits UConn for a 7:05pm puck drop ... The contest will be held at XL Center in Hartford.

CLARKSON TOPS RPI LATE
The homestanding Golden Knights scored three third period goals to top the Engineers, 5-2, on January 12 at Cheel Arena ... Greg Moro netted a pair of goals for Clarkson, including the eventual game-winner at 6:08 of the third, breaking a 2-2 tie ... RPI was led offensively by juniors Jacob Hayhurst and Todd Burgess, who each registered a goal and an assist ... Freshman Owen Savory stopped 29 of the 34 shots he faced in net for the Engineers, while Jake Keilly had 23 saves at the other end of the ice.

ENGINEERS EDGE SAINTS
Rensselaer outlasted St. Lawrence, 6-5, on January 11 at Appleton Arena ... Junior Jake Marrello's second goal in many games stood as the game-winner ... Junior Patrick Polino scored two goals, while classmate Will Reilly registered three assists ... Sophomore goaltender Linden Marshall turned away 25 for fifth win (5-8-0) of the season.

RPI LEADERS
Junior Jacob Hayhurst (3 goal, 18 assists) has a team-best 21 points through 21 games this season ... Junior Will Reilly (3 goals, 9 assists) is second with 12 points, while juniors Patrick Polino (7 goals, 3 assists) and Todd Burgess (4 goals, 6 assists) join freshman Ottoville Leppanen (2 goals, 8 assists) with 10 points apiece ... Fell rookie Kyle Hallbauer (2 goals, 6 assists) has eight.

BETWEEN THE PIPES
Sophomore Linden Marshall (5-8-0) has a 3.70 goals against average and an .890 save percentage as the starter 13 games this season ... Freshman Owen Savory made his collegiate debut in the season opener at UMass, stopping 8 of 9 shots in the third period ... He then earned the win in his first collegiate start on November 23 at UMass Lowell, saving 26 ... For the season, Savory is 1-7-0, with a 2.81 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in nine appearances (7 starts) ... Senior Chase Perry made his season debut against Notre Dame on December 1 and has a 1.58 goals against average and a .944 save percentage in 37:59 of ice time.

ALL-TIME VS. UCONN
The Engineers are 3-1-3 all-time against the Huskies, including a 3-1 defeat on October 20, 2018 at the Houston Field House ... RPI has never beaten UConn outside of Troy, going 0-0-2 in games played in Omaha, Nebraska and at the Hartford Civic Center (now XL Center).

RECENTLY
UConn is unbeaten over the last two meetings, including its win in Troy this season ... The two teams played to a 2-2 tie on November 18, 2014 in Hartford.

After two scoreless periods, UConn netted three in the third to top the Engineers, 3-1, at the Houston Field House ... Max Kalter ended up with the game-winning goal, which came at 9:26 of the frame ... RPI junior Will Reilly tied the game after the Huskies opened the scoring 37 seconds in, on a tally by Alexander Payusov ... Tomas Vomacka earned the victory between the pipes, stopping 23 of 24 shots, while Linden Marshall shouldered the loss, saving 29.

SCOUTING UCONN
The Huskies are led offensively by Karl El-Mir, who has 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points ... Freshman Jachym Kondelik (3 goals, 15 assists) is right behind him with 18 points, while junior Alexander Payusov (11 goals, 3 assists) has 14.

HUSKIES GOALTENDING
Junior Adam Huska (5-9-1) has started 15 of the team's 21 games and carries a 3.13 goals against average and a .905 save percentage ... Freshman Tomas Vomacka (2-4-0) has a 2.89 goals against average and an .899 save percentage in six starts.

CATALYST 
Junior forward Jacob Hayhurst has has a hand in 52.5% (21 of 40) of RPI's goals this season, including 57.7% of tallies in ECAC Hockey play.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
RPI's three transfers all made their debuts at the Catamount Cup in late December ... Chase Zieky registered his first collegiate goal against Vermont, while Mike Gornall picked up an assist on the play ... Defenseman Shane Bear played in both contests as well.

FIRST GOALS
Freshman Jakub Lacka netted his first collegiate goal just 15 minutes into his first game, scoring on the power play in the first period at UMass on October 12 ... He added his second goal the following evening at the Houston Field House ... Freshman Ottoville Leppanen and Ture Linden each potted their first collegiate goals against No. 11 Union on October 26 – a 5-3 victory at the Houston Field House ... Rookie blueliner Kyle Hallbauer scored his first goal in the Cherry & White on November 30 at then-No. 8 Notre Dame ... Freshman defenseman Brady Ferner potted his first goal on December 7 at Yale, while junior Transfer Chase Zieky netted his first collegiate tally at Vermont on December 29 – his 10th career game ... Junior transfer Shane Bear, who had three goals entering the season, netting his first RPI tally at Harvard on January 4.

FIRST POINTS
Rookie defenseman Kyle Hallbauer earned his first collegiate point – an assist – against the Minutemen on October 12 in Amherst ... Classmates Brady Ferner and Jake Johnson each picked up their first collegiate assists against Union on October 27.

HELPING HAND
Junior Jacob Hayhurst's 18 assists rank sixth in the country and first ECAC Hockey skaters, tied with Odeen Tufto and Brandon Fortunato of Quinnipiac ... Hayhurst's 21 points are good for eighth in the conference.

TOP FACE-OFF MEN
The Engineers have won 49.1% of their faceoffs this season, led by junior Jacob Hayhurst, who is at 51.5% ... Freshman Ture Linden is second at 50.4%, while junior Jake Marrello wins them at an even 50.0% rate ... Marrello has won 59.0% of faceoffs in ECAC Hockey play, helping RPI to a 50.3% winning percentage as a team.

MISCELLANEOUS LEADERS
Freshman Jakub Lacka leads the Engineers with three power play goals, while junior Patrick Polino has the club's lone shorthanded tally ...
